As life expectancy increases and retirement plans evolve, more workers aged 70 and older are choosing to remain in the workforce. Far from slowing down, these seasoned professionals are bringing invaluable contributions that many companies are beginning to recognise as a competitive advantage.
Having a workforce with a mix of ages and experience levels is proving to be a winning formula for businesses. While younger hires often bring fresh ideas and tech-savviness, older employees provide deep industry knowledge, mentorship opportunities, and a steadying influence on teams. Companies that leverage this diversity are not only matching but often exceeding the productivity levels of teams dominated solely by younger workers.
A great example of this at Vincents is Louise, who returned to work in her seventies, proving that age is no barrier to meaningful contributions.
After retiring at 65½, Louise soon discovered that retirement wasn’t the relaxing chapter she had envisioned. “I missed the intellectual stimulation of the office,” she explains. “Frustration with retirement set in big time, and having lived and worked in three different countries, travel held no attraction for me at all. What was I to do?”
Louise’s journey back to the workforce with a casual admin role, which rekindled her love for office camaraderie and purpose. Recognising her potential, Vincents offered her a permanent part-time position, where she has been a valued member of the Business Advisory team for over a year.
“Most of the team in my department are quite a bit younger than me and fortunately seem to embrace me ‘with open arms,’” Louise shares. “I bring about half a century of life and work experience – not to mention several questionable jokes, which mostly seem to result in a good laugh. I’m not here to climb the ladder or to compete – I’ve had my career. I just like to feel useful, helping people around me.”
Louise’s contribution highlights the immense value of an age-diverse workforce. By handling essential support tasks, she frees her colleagues to focus on their core responsibilities, creating a more efficient team dynamic. Meanwhile, her younger colleagues assist her with technological challenges, fostering a culture of mutual growth. As Louise notes, “It feels as though the diverse generations each have their contributions to make to the workforce, and my neural pathways have improved in leaps and bounds!”
This trend is also fostering unprecedented levels of knowledge transfer. Older workers serve as a bridge between generations, sharing their wisdom and refining processes, while also learning from their younger colleagues. This dynamic creates a workplace culture of collaboration and growth, boosting innovation and efficiency.
As businesses look to the future, embracing an age-diverse workforce will not only address labour shortages but also unlock new levels of creativity and productivity. Workers aged 70 and up are redefining what it means to be “retired,” proving that experience and dedication remain invaluable assets in today’s evolving job market.
At Vincents, we understand the immense value that a diverse workforce brings to businesses. Whether you’re looking to address labour shortages, enhance team dynamics, or leverage the expertise of seasoned professionals, our Workforce Advisory team is here to help.
